Sunday morning we drove to Joliet to participate in the Warrior Dash. This is a 5K run through the woods with a few obstacles thrown in. These obstacles are insane! Here's a link with a map.
We consolidated cars and got there early to tailgate breakfast. That didn't go as planned but we ate some food and got psyched up. We were very surprised about the amount of families and kids that were there. With it being father's day, there were a lot of Dads running and their families there to cheer them on or their older kids running with them.
If we thought people watching was fun downtown, we hadn't seen anything yet! A lot of people run in costume or just about nothing from what we ended up seeing! Some people have NO shame. Let's just leave it at that.
They have a contest for best Warrior Beard. Mike got a couple beards for them. Not Luke's best look if you ask me.
Here we go! We got on a shuttle to take us over to the actual course and event. As soon as we got on, we sat right in mud because the bus was already dirty from two days worth of racing. The place was a full mudpit. It was insane and a lot of fun! We took a quick before picture and checked our gear to keep it safe and clean. Then we checked out the course as much as we could and started psyching ourselves up!
Here we go! We can do this right? Jumping over cars, running over fire, crawling through mudpits under barbed wire. Bring it on!
And we're dirty. Oh my goodness was it hard. It totally kicked my butt. I ended up making Tiffany walk most of it with me. The hills were the worst part, not that the 9 foot drop into a waist deep bog of mud and the 9 foot climb out of it was much easier.
Afterwards there's a lot to do as far as a concert and food and beer. Lots of beer of course. We opted for showers.....
So the map said showers were available on site. The showers, were water trucks with hoses that they sprayed. There was one big communal crown getting hosed off together. No thank you, we stood in the very long line to get hosed off one by one. Even still it did not cut it and was very very cold!
Here are a lot of the shoes used that day- including mine! There were a few piles around and the race company will either salvage what's possible- hardly- or grind them up for playground areas and other recycled things. There were shoes EVERYWHERE, along with various articles of clothing that people just gave up on.
Finally properly showered and in our free warrior helmets that we earned. It was quite the experience and one that we're planning on doing again next year. I need to start training now!
